Staff Review of Talk Now! Italian July 15th, 1997 I brought home a copy of Talk Now! Italian because I am planning a vacation to Rome in September and wanted to pick up a little of the language. Talk Now! is a new series, so I didn't really know what to expect. I was impressed by the fact that it runs on both Mac and Windows and that it is available in such a wide array of languages. Setup was a snap, and the program ran very smoothly on my aging Pentium 75 machine. This program features a lot of games to reinforce learning and has very nice speak and repeat abilities, which allows you to speak into a microphone and have the computer play your voice back to you. This is a very important feature because it allows you to compare your own speech to that of the native speakers on the CD-ROM. Some language programs can be slow to respond while clicking on icons or talking. TalkNow! is lightning quick and has a very intuitive design that anyone will be able to figure out in a few minutes.
Language learning is accomplished by means of showing you pictures or phrases and then giving you both the Italian and the English translation. Each word can be pronounced by either a man or a woman. The recorded voices are very clear and easy to imitate. The course is slightly addictive and the exercises can be repeated until the learner masters all the vocabulary on the disc. And there are hundreds of words and phrases to learn. I learned how to tell time in Italian in under 30 minutes. If you have a printer you can even print out a picture dictionary. Overall the program is a good choice for the traveler or beginning language enthusiast. It's not as intense as the Language Now! series, but it's available in more languages and is designed to be more fun and give you enough of the language to get around town and hold small conversations.
