Success With English has been used in classrooms containing students from as many as 11 different language backgrounds, including Mandarin, Hmong, Laotian, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese. Success With English features extensive use of close-up photography, allowing the student to see exactly how the teeth, tongue, lips and facial muscles form English sounds. Success With English allows the student to replay each section in order to achieve mastery.
Success With English is 100% modern USA "broadcast" English with no regional or British accent, pronunciation or usage. Our video instructors speak slowly and distinctly. Students first learn to "hear" (recognize) subtle differences ("fifteen" vs. "fifty") and then they develop the ability to pronounce correctly. Success With English gradually prepares the student to confront and understand English as it is actually spoken at normal conversational speed and includes practice with common USA "shortcuts" like "gonna", "shoulda", and "coulda".
Success With English is the only comprehensive ESL program available on DVD. We refer to Success With English as an "academic" program because it is a video adaptation of the universally accepted ESL curriculum. As you will see from the scope and sequence discussion, Success With English is a logical and sequential presentation of the English language that starts with a solid foundation of phonics and basic structures and proceeds all the way through a discussion of conditional tenses and the subjunctive mood. The effectiveness of our curriculum is attested to by the enclosed letters of endorsement from institutional users of Success With English.
1.0 The Video/Audio Presentation. Each video/audio lesson is divided into 7 parts:
1.1 Review. Each lesson begins with a review of material which has already been presented.
1.2 New Material. Following the review the new material is introduced and demonstrated in Spanish so that the students can see how a new concept works, what it means and how it is used. After the Spanish-language explanations, the teacher practices with the students in the studio and then asks the viewers to participate in an extended practice session using the new material.
1.3 Phonics. Phonics practice comes next. American English contains some sounds not found in Spanish, and during the phonics exercise the students will practice these new sounds. The phonics sections are filmed in extreme close-up so that students can watch the teacher's tongue, teeth, and lips to see how each sound is formed.
1.4 Dictation. After phonics comes the dictation exercise. This exercise serves two important functions: First, it gives the student an opportunity to practice spelling. Second, it improves listening comprehension. The teacher selects words from the phonics lesson and gives them to the students out loud, one at a time. They listen to him and then practice writing each word in their workbook. He allows sufficient time to write the word, and then he shows the correct spelling on the chart. The dictation segment is especially important because it serves as a continuous review of basic American English sounds.
1.5 Minimal Pairs. Following the dictation segment the lesson proceeds to the "Minimal Pairs" exercise. This exercise helps the student master some of the subtle differences in pronunciation that frequently give Spanish speakers difficulty. The teacher is filmed in extreme close-up throughout this section so that students can watch his mouth closely as he pronounces each pair of words. Mastering the sounds presented in the minimal pairs section helps the student develop a natural speaking ability that native English speakers will appreciate.
1..6 Reading Practice. After the minimal pairs, the students practice their reading and reading-comprehension skills by reading a short story that incorporates and reinforces the new material presented in each lesson. The teacher fIrst reads the story at normal speed and then he reads it again--slowly--so that the students can read along out loud. Next, they see a video presentation of the story, with the words appearing on the screen as the story is acted out. Finally, the teacher asks several questions about the story to test reading comprehension. This segment has a built-in self-evaluation. If students are studying correctly, and if they are reading along with the video, they should get the right answers to the questions asked by the teacher.
1.7 Dialogue. Next, the teacher will introduce a dialogue--filmed on location--which will come on the screen. Each lesson has a different dialogue, which has been designed to allow the students to test their listening comprehension. All of the dialogues are presented at normal conversational speed, so they may have to listen closely as the actors speak in order to hear and understand all the words. While it isn't necessary to be able to speak English rapidly at fIrst, students should learn to hear and comprehend American English when it is being spoken at normal speed. With practice their English will speed up.
