About Longman Side by Side Interactive

Longman Side by Side is a video-based software program for beginners. The program was designed by Steven J. Molinsky and Bill Bliss. The program is available as a CD-ROM for Windows, but is also available as a network version.

For Macintosh:

• PowerPC processor – minimum 200 MHz
• Mac OS 8.1, 8.5, 9.X (Mac OSX will work in Classic mode only)

Network Version

The Side by Side Interactive (SBSI) Network Version CD-ROM includes a full web-based version of the single user software. Each student simply uses his or her lab computer to run the SBSI software via an Internet browser (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape). Students will not be bothered with inserting or running CD-ROMs at their computer; they will feel as though they are “browsing the web” while getting the full interactive experience of the Side by Side tutorials and games.

Whereas the SBSI single user software requires a computer with a CD-ROM drive, the SBSI network version is designed for a lab setup as a local area network (LAN). A LAN consists of a group of computers that share a single communications line and that typically share the resources of one or more computers called servers.

Installation
The local network administrator installs the SBSI network software directly on a server running IIS or Apache. “Plug-ins” or software modules that assist in playing audio and video are installed on each lab computer to help enhance the SBSI web experience.

Each school should examine their network environment to determine if it meets the technical specifications required to run SBSI (see below). Customers should be advised that their students might experience slight delays when accessing videos on SBSI software if their environment meets only the minimum requirements outlined below.

• 2.3Gb of available hard drive space

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or Netscape 4.5 thru 4.X. (Netscape 6.0 and higher is not supported)
• 800 x 600-screen resolution and 16-bit color
• QuickTime 5.0 for Mac and Windows for video assets
• Shockwave plug-in

• Windows 95/98/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP (Windows 3.1 will not be supported.)
